And now, 'audiotorials'

We're all familiar with product placements in television. And paid write ups in print masquerading as 'articles'.

But yesterday, for the first time, I learnt there is a radio version. Aapki ladki sayaani Lavanya on Radio City 91.1 FM was indulging in the usual idle chatter.

Then she goes: "Us din main sadak cross kar rahi thi aur mujhe ek ladki dikhi... Uska chehra bada pyaara tha.. aur uski skin bahut smooth aur silky thi."

So apparently she went up and asked her: "What is the secret of your smooth and silky skin?"

And the girl replied "Veet".

Except that on radio it sounded like 'wheat', so I thought maybe this is one of those 'use kitchen ingredients for a home facial' kind of recommendations. It took a while to figure she actually meant the hair removal cream.

Except how this is connected to her face, we don't know. And why would one woman be admiring another woman's smooth and silky arms or legs.

All in all, a very strange and desperate attempt to mix up editorial and advertising in the radio format! But I'm sure, more such 'creativity' will follow...

It is obvious that the marketing guru's are running out of ideas.

Whats funny as well as a cause for concern is that some of the advertisemnets seem to be working on teh assumption that a common man has an IQ of teh same level as his ancestor a million years ago. It is a cause of worry because some of these advertisemnets actually work!

ya some ads just leave you wishing you could tear your hair apart...its as if "kuch bhi bana do yaar" attitude has gone into it...but a few leave you going aaah! like the new alpenlibe chocolate flavour ad...thats cute...

  5. Surrogate advertising on Radiocity is nothing new - Lavanya is as guilty as Archana or the woman she replaced on the evening slot (can't quite remember her name...) They're the only channel that does it, or rather gets noticed. RED FM (with RJ Mantra in the evenings at least) has stuck a couple of products into his shows but nowhere as frequently as Radiocity folks.

  7. This kind of Ads are nothing New. Even from the beginning of Radio FM era. From Bath Tiles to Very Recent Mcdonalds(Bengalooru) have been acknowledged by RJs. They are paid for it. Even the Contests are Designed at the will of Advertisers. These FM guys doesn't bare NGOs. Even they have to cough for an Interview. Money Rules.

But now it has been Changed. Thanks to the Competation.
